Why do parents name their kids ?

Hey when I was in school, we would call my friend Rick's house and if his mom would answer she would ask "Do you want BIG or Little ?" LOL. My friend NEVER referred to himself as "" btw, but you couldn't tell his mom that. Everywhere else this guy went he was Rick but when he got home he was just "little ". Poor .
