Army Service Medals WTF?

This is probably old news but WTF?! Basic Combat Training graduates are awarded the Army Service Medal? I thought you won this when you graduated AIT because you became MOS qualified... I see that people have said one wins the ASM, GWOTSM, and the NDM when you graduate "basic training." Do they mean BCT or BCT+AIT=IET? Clarification is our friend...
